Aeroplane has been very busy of late with various film, tv and online licensing projects, record label releases and publicity campaigns, not to mention the ever expanding sister company Songbroker publishing. Here's a bit of a rundown of some of the exciting projects we have been involved with recently.

Westside Three
 

Warner Music and Flying Nun tracks featured heavily on Westside Three.
Warner Music NZ songs included 'White water', 'Devil You Know', 'Blue Note', 'Save Yer' and 'Solo' by DD Smash, 'Money is the Measure' by Shona Laing, 'I Hope I Never' and 'Dirty Creature' by Split Enz, 'Goodbye Good Fortune'  by Street Talk and 'French Letter' by Herbs.
Flying Nun tracks included The Chills 'Kaleidoscope World' and The Clean 'Beatnik', 'Platypus', 'Point That Thing Somewhere Else' and 'Getting Older'.

 

Music Supervision for NZ / Aus drama series Wanted Series Two

Strangers, Lola and Chelsea, intervene in a fatal carjacking while waiting at a suburban bus stop, and are subsequently thrust into a chase from authorities across Australia with a vehicle filled with cash. They must rely solely on each other while on the run. Series 2 has started airing in Oz and we hope to see it screen in NZ soon. Aeroplane was proud to be music supervisors on this NZ/Aus series and really enjoyed working with the production team.

 


Music Licensing - Human Traces

Nic Gorman's debut feature film Human Traces is a psychological thriller set on an isolated subantarctic island, where husband-and-wife scientist team have been posted to monitor the ecosystem of a remote island. A mysterious stranger named Pete arrives and paranoia and deception begin to set in. Aeroplane was thrilled to be a part of the licensing process, securing theGraeme Downes song 'Death and the Maiden' performed by The Verlaines.

The Valedictions' new album Pieces

Valedictions create a mix of gritty rock'n'roll and indie pop laced with melodic harmonies. Their new album Pieces, encompasses songs of love and hate, lust and secrecy to straight up fun rock tracks. Coproduced with Olly Harmer at The Lab and mastered byAngus McNaughton, the album truly reflects the raw energy of the three-piece.Pieces is available now from all good DSPs.

 

 

Swagger of Thieves

Head Like a Hole stormed across the national consciousness in a blizzard of outrage, stunts and gigs in the early 90s. Any band with such a history of implosion, tragedy and resurrection, is going to have a story worth telling. Swagger of Thieves director Julian Boshier has worked for a decade on this film. Aeroplane were proud music supervisors on this rock 'n' roll tale.

 

Filthy Rich Series Two

Filthy Rich Season 2 has kicked off on TVNZ 2 on Tuesdays at 8:30pm. Filthy Productions have been very supportive of NZ music and Series Two is no exception. As Music Supervisors, Aeroplane licensed tracks from local artists Fazerdaze, Kings and Theia, plus a host of Songbroker artists such as Black River Drive, Eva Prowse, Kevin Field, Collapsing Cities and  Ash Grey to name a few.

 

The Meters 'Hand Clapping Song' for KFC NZ

The new KFC NZ TVC campaign features the funky upbeat 1970's track 'Hand Clapping Song' from the iconic Warner Music NZAmerican band The Meters.  We were pleased to license the track via the ad agency, Ogilvy.

Chris Knox 'Not Given Lightly' for Vogel's What Do You Bring? 

Aeroplane  is very proud to have been the music supervisor on  the latest Vogel'screative, "What do you bring to the table?".  Chris Knox's 'Not Given Lightly' (Flying Nun Records / Mushroom Music Publishing) was licensed for this campaign. A toasty and delicious accompaniment to this heart warming and universally loved campaign. Thanks Vogel's.  Agency: Shine  3 min  /  60 second /  30 second 
 

 

 

 

Stretch 'Less Rock More Roll' 

Stretch's debut album Bury All Horsesgarnered high praise from fans and reviewers alike. Having just released his foot-stomping single 'Less Rock More Roll', this tireless troubadour hit the road for a 3 date mini tour of New Zealand, stopping in Auckland, Wellington and hometown of Napier. With a passion to connect with every listener, Stretch is making fans the old fashioned way, one true music lover at a time.

 

 

Annie Goldson's film Kim Dotcom - Caught in the Web

Annie Goldson’s impressively detaileddocumentary clearly sets out the battle between Dotcom and the US Government and entertainment industry, it goes to the heart of ownership, privacy and piracy in the digital age. Aeroplane were music supervisors on this fascinating project.

 

100 Men

100 Men fast-tracks through 40 years of gay history via a countdown of filmmaker Paul Oremland’s most memorable shags. This isn’t just a blow-by-blow account of past glories; instead, Paul uses a personal lens to explore the key moments that have defined the contemporary gay experience. Aeroplane were music supervisors on this funny, poignant film.

 

Oceania Healthcare TVC

Aeroplane was delighted to license the classic song 'Magic Moments' (written byBurt Bacharach / Hal David, and produced by Greg Johnson and sung by Ted Brown) for the charming Oceania Healthcaretelevision commercial for the agency Rainger & Rolfe. 

 

 

Flying Nun's Aldous Harding for Spark

Spark's new brand ad TVC plays out against‘Imagining My Man’, a song from rising New Zealand star and Flying Nun recording artistAldous Harding. Aeroplane represents Flying Nun masters for synch in NZ. 'Imagining My Man' 1 min 30 secs

 

 

The Dregs - a short film by Matt Campbell

Matt Campbell's latest film is about a teenage misfit who starts a band only to lose control to the school bully. The Dregs is  a tribute to high school bands, the Gordons and what elevation from dorkhood a guitar can accomplish. Aeroplane were proud to be music supervisors on this project, licensing songs from Toy Love, The Features, The Clean, Split Enz and more.

 


Shadow of Love - Paul Gurney with The DeSotos

Paul Gurney and Auckland country-blues rockers The DeSotos released their new album Shadow Of Love in April,  receiving very favourable reviews.
Exploring those darker sides of the sweetness of love – the longing, the loss, the “might-have-beens”, these are ultimately songs of hope, stories of learning and acceptance. The band embarks on an acoustic tour of the country on September 20th. Head to their Facebook page for more info

 

 

The many incarnations of Jonathan Crayford

Jonathan Crayford, most often associated with his compositions and dynamic performances on piano, planned a series of shows in June, under several different musical monikers. Spanner (Crayford and drummer Ross Burge) performed a month's residency at Golden Dawn, Meteor - The Jonathan Crayford Electric Trio played to a sell out crowd at Freida Margolis and finally Jonathan headed to Suite Gallery in Wellington for 2 solo piano concerts. Stay tuned for more interesting genre defying projects.


 

Bryony Matthews - Carried Away

Christchurch based singer/songwriter Bryony Matthews recently released 'Carried Away', the third single from her debut album Little Queen. Matthews writes unique, considered, lyrics-focused folk-pop offerings, with her band lending an upbeat ambiance to the songs. Matthews embarked on a mini tour of Aotearoa this August, accompanied by Dictaphone Blues (solo) and Emily Fairlight'Carried Away' is now available for purchase from Bandcamp.  To listen, head to Spotify .
