Aeroplane Music News September 2018

Aeroplane has been very busy of late with various film, tv and online licensing projects, and publicity campaigns. Here's a bit of a rundown of some of what Aeroplane does and some of the exciting projects we have been involved with recently. 

The Heart Dances  

Czech choreographer Jiří Bubeníček and his twin brother and designer, Otto are stars in the European dance world. Rebecca Tansley (Crossing Rachmaninoff) follows them from Prague to Aotearoa as they take up an invitation from the Royal NZ Ballet to expand their adaptation of Jane Campion’s film. Wayne Bell of Aeroplane handled Music Supervision on this production, licensing music from Michael Nyman, Charles Ives, Bedřich Smetana, Chopin, Debussy, Brahms, Flavio Villani, Shostakovich, Alfred Schnittke plus contemporary artists Minuit, James Webster, Bic Runga, and Aldous Harding to name a few.

Blair Jollands - 7 Blood

 London based NZ artist, Blair Jollands has just released his new album 7 Blood on August 24th. Jollands is often compared vocally to Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright & Scott Walker, his music communicating a paradoxical mix of melancholia and optimism. The songs on 7 Blood are as diverse musically as they are thematically.  Keep an eye out for Jollands, who will be featuring on the TVNZ series Dream Catchers of which he also composed the soundtrack.

All Or Nothing - NZ All Blacks

All or Nothing is a television series following the New Zealand All Blacks rugby team throughout 2017, taking an in-depth look at the players and coaches on and off the field. The Others Way Festival 2018

For the fourth year running, Auckland’s K  Road metamorphosed into an oasis of fresh, unique local music, from indie to electronica, hip-hop to pop and much more…with 50 acts performing across 13 K Rd venues. One ticket; multiple venues; a plethora of great artists - The Others Way 2018 is a music lover's dream! This sell-out event was a huge success for music enthusiasts of all ages. Brought to you by Flying Out and 95 BFM, We can't wait until next year.

Married At First Sight NZ

Strap on your heels and iron your suits because you are invited to the biggest weddings of the year! This season on Three, 12 singles will get paired up by the experts and Married At First Sight! Will they find their happily ever after? Aeroplane was pleased to license the Michael Bublé track 'Feeling Good' on behalf of Warner Music for the TV trailer of this popular forthcoming reality series. Watch it here.

Kings & Associates NZ Tour

Kings & Associates were recently named 3-time winners of the 2018 Australian Blues Music Awards for Best Band, Best New Talent,  and Best Producer. Since their humble beginnings, the band has become one of Australia's most unique and exciting neo-blues bands. Kings recently performed at Bay of Islands Jazz & Blues Fest plus shows in Napier, Wellington and Hamilton.

KFC New Zealand

The KFC NZ campaign featuring the funky upbeat 1970's track 'Hand Clapping Song' from the iconic Warner Music NZ American band The Meters has just been rolled over for their latest creative.  We were pleased to license the track via the ad agency, Ogilvy. In addition, KFC has licensed the distinctive Warner Music track 'Bom Bom' by Sam and the Womp for their 'Life's better when it's finger lickin' good' commercial. 

The Courtneys for Ardene

We were stoked to help popular Canadian fast-fashion retail chain Ardene license the very cool track 'Silver Velvet' from Flying Nun band The Courtneys for their young and hip 'Denim Nation' online campaign. Watch the video here.

Westside Series 4

Always a big supporter of Kiwi music, we were pleased to license some NZ humdingers as well as international classics for South Pacific Pictures' TV series Westside 4 on behalf of Warner Music. Songs such as Split Enz 'How Can I Resisit Her?', DD Smash 'The Gambler' and 'Repetition', Herbs 'French Letter', Coconut Rough 'Sierra Leone' and Pretenders' songs 'Message of Love' and 'Before I Go To Sleep'.

Tui Mamaki - Fly

Holed up in a soviet style block, in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, through the heat of 2016 summer, armed with a Little Martin acoustic guitar, Tui Mamaki came up with a collection of songs, 5 of which were selected for her new album Fly, out November 16th. Tui trained for the last 3 years in the techniques and repertoire of Bulgarian folklore. A NZ tour awaits through the month of November. Here is a taster of the album.

Kings for Super Rugby 2018

Aeroplane Music project managed the licensing of Kings' high energy track 'Play The Game' written especially for the Super Rugby 2018 campaign, kicking off the season. Watch the dynamic campaign here.

Mecuzine - Cutting Strings

Auckland rock band Mecuzine recently released their debut album Cutting Strings. Decades of performing, touring and recording nationally and abroad make this 5-piece a formidable combination - each with a story to tell from their time with various bands including Hello Sailor, National Anthem, The Cure, Shade, Child and First Base to name a few. Mecuzine play with attitude, honesty and raw, unrelenting energy. Cutting Strings is available now.

Flying Nun's Aldous Harding for Spark

Spark's TVC plays out against ‘Imagining My Man’, a song from rising New Zealand star and Flying Nun recording artist Aldous Harding. Spark has just announced they will be sticking with this song for another season. Aeroplane represents Flying Nun masters for synch in NZ.

Never Town

Part surf film, part conservation film, Never Town takes a journey along some wild coastlines and talks with people fighting to keep them wild. Filmed along the Southern coasts of Australia, it’s an exploration of what these places mean to surfers… and what surfers are willing to do to save them.  This production licensed the track 'Fish' by iconic Flying Nun band The Clean.

In Dark Places

In Dark Places is the gripping true story of Teina Pora, an innocent man, imprisoned for two decades for a crime he did not commit, and an ex-cop's heroic battle to win him his freedom. This television production licensed the Flying Nun track 'Heavenly Pop Hit' by The Chills.

Greenpeace New Zealand

Aeroplane Music was proud to help facilitate the licence of the iconic Split Enz track 'History Never Repeats' for Greenpeace NZ's Offshore Drilling Campaign. Watch the moving video here.
